| G11’s 22 June – Meerkats vs Wembley Downs |
|
After recovering from being half drowned the weekend before, the G11’s Meerkats came out in the sunshine and played some really good football this week. Lined up against the very strong looking Wembley Downs team (who have been undefeated so far) the Meerkats played one of their best games of the season. In a keenly contested opening half, Claire B. managed to put away a lovely team goal to have the Meerkats up 1 nil at half time. In the second half Olivia C. came out of the goals to line up in attack, and showed her versatility by kicking another goal for the Meerkats. The pressure was then well and truly on the Wembley Downs team. Hadley had a turn in goals in the second half, and was very unlucky to have to experience one of those really bad goalie moments. There was a bit of confusion with her own defenders which meant that her goal kick went straight to a Wembley Downs player and was then promptly dispatched straight back into goals. A huge roar went up from the Wembley Downs parents thinking that their girls were now on a roll, but the Meerkats held their composure and kept on with their game. A couple of really good chances at goal were also there for the taking during the game, particularly the ball that just stayed impossibly poised near the Wembley Downs line refusing to go over. The final score line was Meerkats (2) and Wembley Downs (1). Steve was very proud of all the girls this week. You all played very well and most of you stuck to your positions. Great midfield, great defence (particularly Eliza, Talani and Claire O.) combined with some tireless running from our “terriers” this week made all the difference. By working together you all gave the attackers the opportunity to score. Well done girls. Regards, Janelle Orman |
